Katrina PerkinsOvernight (noun) work”day” begins near sunset, filming through the darkness of night, usually exteriors, ending the next morning with the changing of the morning sky a half hour before sunrise.

Fraturday (noun)  an overnight on a Friday, ending Saturday morning.

Last week I worked a three “day” overnight booking filming a movie with Dave Franco.  I was a masked character in a group of hundreds, but the location was amazing and should look really great for the onscreen finale. Let it be known: One overnight throws your sleep schedule off for at least a day, or even two.  By the time you get home, the sun is up and most everyone else is rising and shining.  Trying to sleep for more than a few hours is an effort, waking only a couple hours later, then trying to function on half the sleep normally necessary- the day drags as much as you do.  I cannot wait to take a shower and call it an early night and go to bed at a [once dreaded] child’s bedtime of 8 pm.

Back-to-backs can be a challenge, even when they are not overnights, especially when the project booked is different from one day to the next.  Inevitably, the first show will work 14-15 hours, wrapping really late.  By the time you get home, pack the requested wardrobe for the next day’s movie with the Murphy’s Law call-time of 5:30 am, three hours of sleep is usual.  Thus, back-to-back bookings eventually wear you down, requiring time to recoup, in the hopes of preventing a fall to illness, which can take you away from work opportunities even longer.

I owe myself eight hours of sleep; between the three consecutive overnights and one Fraturday just past- this is when being a napping pro would come in useful.  If it is a rainy day, I can nap, or a hot day when nothing is really scheduled… otherwise, the mind will not shut-up long enough to fall asleep in the middle of the day. Today, I napped!  Tomorrow, I go to a softball game to cheer on the SAG-AFTRA team in Central Park!  Hard work deserves some fun in the sun!!

Needless to say, the last attempt at consistent, regular posting… failed.  GothamSo, as a poet, I enjoy alliterations: Taco Tuesday, Filing Friday, Manicure Monday- to name only a few personal favorites.  Why not WordPress Wednesday!?  It should, hopefully, be straightforward enough for me to keep track, and please calmness help me, stay determined with focus to achieve.  Usually, it comes down to (haha) a lack of time management, time escapes me and I am at it’s mercy, researching usually- most currently the RAW diet [pardon the pun] ad nauseam, for the health of the four-legged-fur-baby.

Secondarily, decision making, committing to one choice- ugh- at times the bane of my existence.  Some say it’s the Libra in me; I know I perform better all around when balanced body and mind with regular Yoga practice (another aim I fail to complete).  Here I am, 6:15pm NYC, flying through to post this before 6:59pm when the date changes.  I literally just chuckled to myself.  This is so fun! Truly.  “I don’t have a photo; what should I write about; that’s not related to being an actress” = excuses, excuses, excuses.

You lovely wonderful folks read and connect with me, and I with you.  We feed each other across oceans, and I love and miss the camaraderie.  Always seeking balance and structure, attempting to enforce a system that work upon myself and disappointedly not succeeding, giving up for a spell, and coming back to give it a go again, this time: I must remember to have

THE FUN.

Such is Life.  Started a “Cliche” blog last week, probably finish it by next (smiles).  Aaahhh, so the acting world, last week I worked as a Stand-In (another blog on that to come surely) on the Batman prequel TV show ‘Gotham’.  Even though I most likely cannot be seen on screen, boy the hair man, Joseph Ferrara, had some fun- he really knew what he was doing, and the make-up woman, Heidi, had to amp up the eyes to balance it out.  An amazing soundstage to work on here in Brooklyn- oh yeah, did I mention I moved from way out in Long Island?

Bad Seed PosterFriday is opening night for a naughty 1950’s play by renowned writer Maxwell Anderson.  ‘Bad Seed’, the last Broadway success before his death, is a devilish mother/daughter tale of secrecy and murders. Anderson wrote numerous plays, and movies including ‘Death Takes a Holiday’, ‘Joan of Arc’, and Hitchcock’s ‘The Wrong Man’.  A masterpiece play, adapted from William March’s long-awaited novel “The Bad Seed”, it ran on  Broadway five months and was later made into two movies.  Studios changed the ending in the first version, because the 1956 audience could not accept such an appalling conclusion where the villain … (no spoilers), and it was nominated for four Academy Awards- including ‘Best Director’ for British Mervyn LeRoy.

Having been asked to audition by the director of this 2014 incarnation, I watched the second, color version of the movie, with David Carradine among the cast, dressed and practiced my best Southern accent, then dutifully showed up to try out for a part. Producer/director, Henry Brewer, immediately offered me the role of the mother and sent me home with a copy of the play.  Mrs. Christine Bravo Penmark is a woman, a character, I strongly did not like.  I was repulsed by her, and because of this intense response, I knew this was going to be a challenge, a good opportunity to stretch me beyond bounds of comfort.  One of her first lines is “I’m not very self-sufficient.”; Completely not me, and this ‘weakness’ is probably what turned me off to start.

Neither of the movies does justice to the play, something is lost even though Anderson is responsible for the screenplay.  Much of the Broadway cast was in the original black and white movie, but I turned it off half-way through supposedly due to a distaste for the acting style of the time, with one exception- the actress who plays Mrs. Daigle- Eileen Heckart, who won a Golden Globe for her performance.  My undertaking thrills and terrifies me, because the part is grande- the tale truly is twisted and violent- and the emotions are quite extreme.  Breathing life into fully experiencing these six days of Christine’s life is well worth all the work.

Forgive the absence not posting for ages.  I miss many of you, to name only one: Ralph at bluefishway.com, and smile fondly every morning as I reach for rice milk to cool my tea!  Since last posting February/March life has continued, much to do and too few hours in the day, as it tends to be.  For five months beginning the first Thursday of June, I was part of a work-share (I traded two hours of work weeding, planting, shoveling, etc. for an overflowing bag of Fresh produce) on a local organic farm.  “If you like to eat, thank a farmer.”  How many people have even met a farmer? farm girls

I have also excitingly adopted a puppy two months ago!  He is a lovely runt of a Rottweiler who has brought much love and sleeplessness to my days and nights.  Though I grew up in a household of large dogs, this is the first I am tackling a beast as an adult.  I relish the challenge, love learning and caring for this little, swiftly growing, now 5 month old baby.  Pyriel5M

Nine/ten days ago I deliciously celebrated a birthday.  As a Libra, not knowing much aside from the struggle for balance and ease to which unbalance occurs, indecision is supposedly one of my traits- fitting and most accurate.  When I would decide on a super topic to write about, say a movie worked on this time last year, then insecurity of how exactly to write to fill a word count or if the topic was interesting or chance redundancy or lack of a photo. I vow to do better, because this WordPress family brings me smiles and giggles and much supportive encouragement with genuine interest.  Once advised to post weekly, I felt too much pressure to deliver quality content; hence making a personal adjustment of a goal for once a month- too much space/time was created, not working either.  So, here I go, a new resolution of every ten days, on the 9’s.

Deepest sincere thank yous to all for sticking with me so patiently. Thinking of you frequently!

We are a beautiful breed.

For Beauty we bleed

Our Souls on the page

Knitting words in moments

of Truth unspoken–

haze of day’s rage

when Happiness remembered

Knocks tauntingly

rattling the cage

we somehow choose

to live this life contained

within deception’s brain.

Why does True Beauty bring

Eyes wide and Light Bright

make us squint and close.

Our ears, in the sand combing

onion skins thin cries

cutting o’lives lies

by Lending Honesty

and Listening to LOVE
