NM4L9196 (2)Numerous times have others complimented how clearly I enunciate, and even the hard of hearing appreciate my vocal quality.  One more reason for auditioning to become an audiobook narrator. The four hour (each way) drive from University to my hometown each weekend began a journey as an avid audiobook listener.  “The Three Musketeers”, “Phantom of the Opera”, and “Fahrenheit 451” were a few of the first listens.  Ever since, ‘talking books’ have been a staple, devouring self-helps/spiritual in times needing guidance, Shakespeare whilst doing dishes, and financial investing books as I dye my hair.

In Los Angeles, I was honored to be a part of Tsunami Radio Theater, a group that recorded independently written stories, and was recognized with the “Rising Star: Hardest Working Actress” award.  Time in the studio with such an amazing crew of gifted voice actors will always remain a fond memory.  This month I focus toward the future, and hope to become a narrator for Audible.  On Tuesday 18 March, I audition in New Jersey and am immensely excited.  You as my WordPress family are consistently supportive and I truly hope to have marvelous news to report soon.

Last year I took a course with Audie (the audiobook equivalent of the Oscars) Award winning narrator Johnny Heller, which is where i learned of this amazing opportunity to audition to be a part of the Amazon team.  The path Life takes is rarely the one envisioned, but when we appreciate the journey and the divine route being guided through all the ‘wants’ and desires, sometimes it is good to realize the right here-right now is enough.  My wants list includes a dishwasher, washer/dryer, and a puppy- those are the items this little self feels would make her happy.  In truth, I am already happy, and thankful to have created this Freedom for myself to take a chance to say “Yes!” to a Life that allows me to work on a schedule that suits me.  Sometimes I wish to be a smidge more focused, but that is just another “want”.  Thank you all for your good vibrations from around the world.  Please accept my gratitude.

I have not known where to begin.  Multiple events have transpired and yet I remain with simply no clue how to cover them all: a blog for each? is that enough for a whole post by itself? has it been too long? am I suppose to keep-up with “behind the scenes” 411?  Therefore, as I often do (or do-not, to the point) when a perfect, easy solution evades me… I refrain from forward momentum and make mac n’cheese or chicken noodle soup, pondering the options.

"in the booth"

“in the booth”

Let us now begin with “The Million Second Quiz”: exhilarating and balanced by being challenging. A twelve hour LIVE shift made the combo deliciously exhausting.  As a voice over artist, I am experienced recording in a sound studio with only my auditory craftsmanship to carry me.  As a theater performer, LIVE is the name of the game; stepping onto a stage butterflies of possibility propel at the same instant catch your breath.  I could literally trip and fall, forget a line, the other guy could forget his- and there we might be in silence… where do we go from here… and that ‘anything could happen’ truth and connectedness is what feels like a roller coaster we stand on line for hours to share.

Standing-In for Seacrest

The Quiz was unique as a disembodied interactive voice, sans true rehearsals, asking questions LIVE to contestants battling to make it to/stay in “The Money Chair”.  I would speak clearly, and slowly- that was key because the pre-determined random questions handed to me every other hour (I was on for an hour, then an hour to prepare, whilst the other questioner queried contenders) were limited: RUNNING out was simply not an option.  Hence, I repeatedly heard “Slow down” directed in my headset.  Watching online, one could witness the impatience on the faces of would be millionaires as we took time to enunciate every multiple choice answer.  There was a script, and Ryan Seacrest is the one paid to ad-lib.  Eventually the twelve hours overnight shift required jumping jacks around 4 A.M., but the camaraderie of having a seat on such a Great Adventure was an overall blast!

There’s a place that no one knows

Sometimes most I love to go

Always here I’m all alone

Near to me and close to home

The space is small and warmth resides

No fear exists; no truth to hide

I’m loud and free, out of my mind

More paths must be I want to find

Searching- there, is happiness

Landing- comfort, I confess

Always, you expect to be.

Changing is reality

Know final words, of what,? to say

My feelings here have gone astray

Growing them from sad and glum

Smiling now I laugh and hummm

Since childhood, I have a fascination with wolves.  Perhaps it was growing up always with rottweilers (earnestly loving their little bear-cub looking puppiness and the sweet protectiveness ours grew into) while my best friends’ parents were cops with German shepherds.  Or maybe, being an only child until the age of twelve lent itself to the independent, lone wolf mentality.  In fact, wolves are endangered, misunderstood, and loyal.  When I began in Show-Business, my fledgling actor self arrogantly questioned “Why does anyone need an agent, except because the system says so?”; why give ten percent of moneys earned, when I am doing all the acting? Silly girl.

Now, working full-time as my own agent (submitting for auditions), manager (creating a brand/voice), and publicist (contacting media), I realize – when will I have time to audition, not to mention act in the parts I will procure!?!  And…. create time to continue efforts in attaining said opportunities to act professionally.  This is when I realize: an agent is not someone simply taking a cut, or working as a middle-person to weed out the truly talented from the masses of flash-in-the-pan wannabes.  An agent is a Professional, a dream I share.  Only mine is one of acting, and earning in complete sustainability of this humble lifestyle: TO ACT full-time is the goal. This, I realize, includes a business team– numerous persons putting together cover letters, headshots, resume, press packets, and providing professional relationships.

It is trite to read: if there is ANYTHING else you could be happy doing, by all means do it…. the truth is- the business side of the show can be tedious.  Having walked a block in the shoes of a show-Business professional, I barely have a glimpse of what their day in and day out drudgery entails.  I whole heartedly respect the side of the biz in which I have less experience.  Do what you love, and you shall be happy.  Part of my goals going forward involves developing a loyal pack to represent the vitality and passion for this art, with the prerequisite flair for the business aspect of this exhibition.

When you have a target, and the aim is true, you will hit the mark.  The director of the play I just finished performing in offered me parts in both ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘MacBeth’, without my needing to audition.  After first working with him last summer in ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ I took the time to send a Thank You card following the final show.  Since then, in addition to his recent offers, he has cast me as a lead role and a few supporting roles in his productions.  By recognizing an opportunity to express gratitude, I strengthened a relationship and established myself as an appreciative actress interested in working with him again.

My ambition has been to achieve larger roles and work regularly while getting paid within the field of acting, in turn generating favorable circumstances to practice marketing and networking.  A few weeks ago I invited three newspapers to the most recent play.  This was the first step (after researching and calling to generate contact information) in establishing a relationship. Whether they showed-up this time or not, I have taken steps, with follow through, to grow a friendly working rapport.  In the near future I will compose another e-mail welcoming their attendance at each of the Shakespeare month long runs in July and August, with an extra line or two expressing interest in their current work, moving me one more notch above a ‘never heard of’.  Expanding the list to include three additional newspapers with each production, to make a total of nine writers I consistently contact professionally, will surely increase my chances of a favorable review in at least one periodical.

Truly, I admire writers, anyone living creatively really.  Having written and loved poetry since childhood, to be paid to write- songs, articles, greeting cards- is a chance I would hop on in a heartbeat.  Life can be perceived as random and less than envisioned.  However, each moment prepares us to live more fully, each day presents a chance to create the destined dream.  Make a S.M.A.R.T. plan, devoting one hour everyday to your objective, for, with perseverance passion can be made a paid reality.
